The mission is to provide excellent service to area residents and includes commercial banking services for the small to medium-sized businesses located in our marketplace. We originate a large share of the home mortgage loans made in Bennington and Rensselaer Counties. We have introduced additional financial services, including Internet-based banking and investment sales and service.

The Board of Directors is composed of local residents charged with the responsibility of enhancing the original philosophy of a community bank: providing home loans, business loans, and a variety of savings accounts, Certificates of Deposit, checking and Money Market Accounts.

Berkshire Bank’s regional headquarters is located at 4928 Main Street Manchester Center, Vermont, where it also maintains a branch office. Other branches in the region are located in Arlington, Dorset, Ludlow, and Rutland.   Berkshire Hills Bancorp is a regional financial services company with assets of $2.5 billion. Headquartered in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, it is the parent of Berkshire Bank – America’s Most Exciting Bank (sm). Through its subsidiaries, Berkshire provides business and consumer banking, insurance, and wealth management services through 48 banking and insurance offices in Western Massachusetts, Northeastern New York, and Southern Vermont.

Berkshire Bank contributes to the health, wealth and vitality of our communities with personal and business banking, competitive mortgage rates, trust and investment advisors and friendly hometown service.  Visit Berkshire Bank on line at www.berkshirebank.com.

Photo on left was taken on June 16, 2007. We greatly appreciate the continued support of Factory Point Bank and now, Berkshire Bank employees. In addition, the Greater Berkshire Foundation, made a generous contribution that we used to build the home in West Rupert.

"We support BAHfH because, we are committed to investing in the communities in which we serve.  We take pride in helping our neighbors, and understand that community strength ultimately makes for a stronger company. "

In the spring of 2008, the Berkshire Bank found a most creative way to support Habitat. They donated funds sufficient for the purchase of building supplies for two sheds.

As a part of their service learning requirement, students at Burr and Burton built a shed that was assembled at the West Rupert home on June 7, 2008. The shed give the Morey family badly needed storage space. In addition to helping a Habitat family, the students learned basic building skills from their teacher, Cliff Hay.

Students at the Career Development Center of Bennington also built a shed for Habitat. Jim Glibert, their teacher, wanted his students to learn how to build a house and building this shed was a great first step.

The students transported the shed to r.k. Miles in Manchester where it will be displayed until it is sold. Habitat will use the proceeds to buy building supplies to help another family.

Peter Lafayette, the Berkshire Bank Foundation’s Executive Director stated, “This project is an innovative way of both helping a local non-profit agency and teaching young people the value of giving back to the community. We are excited to be involved in this project that has the involvement of several groups, and includes a positive hands-on experience.”

The Berkshire Bank deserves tremendous credit for finding two very creative ways to work with another area business, r.k. Miles and two schools to support Habitat's work in our community.

Bromley Mountain Ski Area
3984 Route 11
Peru, VT 05152

Family Friendly
Visiting Bromley is like visiting an old friend. There is a level of comfort, relaxation and security felt here, we're told, you simply don't feel elsewhere. Learning to ski or board at North America's #1 Resort for Family Programs (Ski Magazine 2004) brings generation after generation back to Bromley for more 'Fun in the Sun'.

Varied Terrain
Bromley's East Side bristles with bumps and steeps, a la the true Black Diamonds, Havoc, Pabst Panic and Stargazer. Upper and Lower Twister, down the mountain's front face, will thrill and challenge intermediates while Run Around, which winds its way down around the West Side, will positively enthrall beginners.

Support for Habitat
Bromley Mountain has contributed one adult full season pass for the 2007-08 season. This is an unrestricted pass and is valued at $995. We will conduct a raffle and the details will be posted soon on the home page of our website.

Last year a raffle of two mid-week seasons passes was conducted by Dianna Ivey's 8th grade advisory at MEMS. The students learned a lot about Habitat and the value of giving back to help others. They raised more than $600 and the funds were used for the home we completed in the fall of 2007 in Rupert.

We are most grateful to Bromley Mountain for their generous support of our mission.

Both Sides of the Border!

Open for lunch & dinner, this traditional Mexican restaurant serves wonderful steaks, chicken & seafood, fajitas, Black Angus burgers, salads, sandwiches, and wraps. You won't want to miss 1/2 price Margaritas on Thursdays and great outdoor dining in the Summer.

In the spirit of the holiday season, Candeleros donated $5.00 of every entrée sold between December 1st and December 15th 2007 to the Bennington Area Habitat for Humanity affiliate. The funds raised through this promotion will be used to purchase building supplies for a home that will be started in West Rupert in late April 2008.

A group of Habitat supporters had a wonderful time enjoying a great meal.

What We Do

The official description is “the collection, transfer, processing and disposal of non-hazardous waste” but, simply put, we make go away what people don’t want around. That’s where the simplicity ends. With the advent of recycling, the growing awareness of the health effects of unmanaged disposal and transfer sites; collecting, moving, sorting and safely disposing of our waste has become an often complex business.

Casella Waste Management has helped us over the years by providing dumpsters at our work sites and also at the auctions in 2007 and 2008. We are most grateful to the management of Casella for their generous support.

Citizens Bank

In 1828, Citizens Financial Group got its start as a small community bank called the High Street Bank in Providence, Rhode Island. In 1871, the directors of High Street Bank established Citizens Savings Bank. Today, Citizens Financial Group has $155 billion in assets, making it the 8th largest commercial bank holding company in the United States. Owned by RBS, The Royal Bank of Scotland Group plc, Citizens now has branches in 13 states, including Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Vermont, and Rhode Island. They also have non-branch offices in more than 30 states. Linda Magoon is the Vermont Regional Manager.

"Citizens Bank is guided by the belief that the strength of our company is tied to the strength of the communities where we do business. "

Citizens has a tradition of recognizing one bank in each state each year for its employees' outstanding commitment to giving back to the community in which they live and work. The West Pawlet Branch was selected because of their commitment to supporting Habitat's mission. As you can see below, members of the bank have worked on site, they have encouraged colleagues from other branches to work with them, and they worked with us to secure generous annual support from Citizens Bank. The West Pawlet branch received a beautiful plaque and a check for $2,500 with the responsibility to determine the charity that they wanted to help. They chose Habitat! We are most grateful for their involvement and very generous support. (Pictured are Donna Daigle, Christine Brown, Harry Haldt, Linda Magoon, and Dick Malley. Unable to be present were Trudy Kelly and Brennyn Daniels).

A group from Citizens Bank helped with the build in West Rupert on June 21, 2008. The group included employees and customers from the West Pawlet, Proctor, and Bennington branches.

Brennyn, Mary Ellen, and Michelle from the Citizens Bank worked on the Rupert home in June. They installed siding.

On November 4th a group from the West Pawlet branch, including branch manager, Harry Haldt, Brennyn Daniels, Christine Brown, and Michele Hunter helped to apply and sand joint compound on the walls. This photo montage includes some photos of them in action.

In the fall of 2005 a group of Citizens employees representing the three branches in Bennington County worked together on the Shaftsbury home. In addition, the bank made a generous financial contribution.

The bank has established a very unique program in Burlington, VT. The Committee on Temporary Shelter (COTS) serves approximately 1,600 homeless children, women and men each year through its emergency shelters and service programs in the Burlington area.

Comollo Antiques and Fne Wines

ABOUT US AND THE SHOP - We have an old school, brick and mortar, open shop (a fast disappearing breed), where buying, selling, appraising, educating and talking about antiques, art, jewelry and cultural artifacts is all we do, period, full time, every day, for over 20 years. We have a constant stream of people bringing us stuff, and we get requests to come look at new things every day. Being in the Antiques business these days demands that one of us is constantly on the road, doing pickups, deliveries, appraisals, in home consultations, meeting with restorers and conservationists and traveling to specialized libraries and collections for research. We are the third generation of a family tradition and are unquestionably one of the busiest shops in Vermont! The next time you are in New England please be sure to stop here in Manchester Vermont to check out our little slice of heaven.

Clarke has served as the auctioneer for our first two benefit auctions (in July 2007 and 2008). He has done this as a volunteer. This is Clake's contribution to Habitat and the community. in which he lives.

Photo - Clarke is on the right - standing with Andy Tarantino, owner of A Safe Place.

We are most appreciative of Clarke's generous support!

We partner with Efficiency Vermont to keep construction costs down and make sure our homes are safe, healthy, durable and affordable over the long term. Efficiency Vermont is the nation's first statewide provider of energy efficiency services. Funded by an energy efficiency charge on Vermonter’s electric bills, Efficiency Vermont is an independent, non-profit organization under contract to the Vermont Public Service Board. They provide technical advice, financial assistance and design guidance to help make Vermont homes, farms, schools and businesses energy efficient.

Habitat receives a rebate for meeting specific requirements for insulation, ventilation, use of energy efficient appliances, and lighting.. There needs to be an Energy Star ventilation fan on a 24-hour timer. The heating system, refrigerator and dishwasher must be ENERGY STAR labeled. We install no fewer than eight hard-wired fixtures for energy efficient lights and each of our homes meets insulation and air sealing standards. We invest in good windows. Our houses are very tight; built to withstand Vermont’s cold winters. To learn about energy efficient appliances go to Energy Star Appliances.

The Efficiency Vermont website contains lots of practical advice for residential and business users. By calling 888-921-5900, people can learn how to lower their energy bills, figure out why their electric bills are high, and get rebates for their energy-efficient purchases. In addition, people can get technical help and learn about financial incentives for energy-efficient buildings, equipment and lighting.

We hope our good building practices and use of energy saving devices will serve as an example for other homeowners. If we can afford to incorporate energy efficiency into an affordable home, anybody can! Vermont's reduction of carbon dioxide in 2005, through energy efficiency in homes and businesses, provided the same emissions reductions that would have been achieved if 76, 300 fewer cars had traveled on Vermont's roads in 2005. Everyone can be part of reducing Vermont’s carbon emissions by following our example and working with Efficiency Vermont to reduce energy use.

At Gap Inc., social responsibility is fundamental to who we are and how we operate as a company.

Gap Inc. is one of the world's largest specialty retailers, with more than 3,100 stores and fiscal 2007 revenues of $15.8 billion. They operate four of the most recognized apparel brands in the world — Gap, Banana Republic, Old Navy and Piperlime.

They state on their website that "Every day, we look for new ways to connect with customers around the world, provide value to our shareholders and make a positive contribution in the communities where we do business. " The employees of The Gap and the Banana Republic of Manchester have made a most positive contribution to Habitat.

Store manager, Elizabeth Garay organized volunteers from the Gap to help with the Rupert build in the summer of 2007. Three volunteers helped almost every Wednesday. The Gap donated ten dollars for every hour that an employee helped, and we received a $250 contribution. In addition, this spring GAP Inc. recognized the Manchester store for their dedication to Habitat and made an additional $2,500 contribution.

In 2008, three employees from the GAP and the Banana Republic of Manchester have volunteered every Wednesday to help with the West Rupert build.

Rick, Justin, and Aaron spent Friday morning, June 1st putting the plywood and felt on the Lewis home in Rupert. They made short work of a job that would have taken volunteers more time and would have surely been risky for people not accustomed to this work!

Lou and his crew helped us once again at the end of May 2008. They put the plywood and felt on the roof at the Morey home in West Rupert and thus saving us time and most importantly, leaving the high work to professionals, not to volunteers.

We are most grateful to Lou and his crew for helping us out in this way. When asked why they were helping, Lou explained, "We have been very fortunate, we have the skills, and we are glad to be able to give back to help others in this way."

Lou serves as the Zion Episcopal Church liaison to Habitat's Faith Relations Committee.

RMS Plumbing and Heating

Phil Mazzucco, owner of RMS Plumbing and Heating, donated the tubing for radiant heat in the Rupert Home. Because of his generosity, the heating for this home will cost no more than conventional baseboard heat. Accoding to Efficiencty Vermont, there will be a considerable cost saving because the water will not need to be heated to the same temperature as baseboard heat. This system will provide the Lewis family with years of a warm home at a considerable cost saving for the lifetime of the home.

Phil designed and installed the plumbing for the Morey home in West Rupert. We are most grateful to Phil for his generosity and greatly admire his community spirit!

Square D

For many years, Schneider Electric has supported Habitat for Humanity International, an organization dedicated to eliminating poverty housing throughout the world. We share in Habitat for Humanity's commitment to helping people in need everywhere secure decent, affordable shelter.

As a National Partner and a Cornerstone Society member of Habitat’s "More Than Houses” campaign, Schneider Electric has donated almost $6 million worth of residential electrical equipment for use in homes built in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. In 2006, Schneider Electric renewed its commitment to Habitat with a pledge to donate $7 million worth of Square D® residential electrical equipment over the next four-and-a-half years.  In addition, many of our people dedicate time and muscle to Habitat home builds.

To further underscore our commitment to Habitat for Humanity, in 2007 the Schneider Electric/Square D Foundation will fund up to seven whole house sponsorships. The sponsorships fully fund the cost of the land, infrastructure and materials to build a Habitat home. The Foundation also funds the cost for employee teams to participate in one-day home building events.

According to Habitat, 5.1 million American families have "worst-case" housing needs and are forced to pay more than half their income for housing, endure overcrowded conditions or live in houses with severe physical deficiencies. Worldwide, some 2 billion people live in poverty housing. More than 1 billion live in urban slums, and that figure is expected to double by 2030.

Working in partnership with low-income families to build decent homes they can afford to buy, Habitat helps to break the cycle of poverty and hopelessness. We believe in the efforts of Habitat for Humanity and our role in facilitating our people’s involvement in Habitat activities in their communities.

We are most grateful to Square D for supplying the circuit breakers for each of our homes.

The Perfect Wife Restaurant and Tavern contributed $5 for every entrée served in the dining room and $1 for every entrée served in the tavern throughout the month of September (2007). 708 entrees were served in the main dining room and 1,092 entres were served in the tavern - for a total of $4,632!

We are most grateful to Amy and Geoff for finding such a creative way to support Habitat's mission. We thank everyone who took advantage of this opportunity to eat well and to support Habitat's work in our community.

They did the same promotion in April of 2006 and a total of $6,025 was raised for Habitat as a result of this extradinarily generous promotion!

In explaining their decsion to help Habitat in this way, Chef/owners, Amy and Geoff Chamberlain said "we feel this was an opportunity through the restaurant to raise money and awareness of the local efforts of Habitat for Humanity. By providing a great meal to our guests, they in turn will be helped provide a much needed safe and affordable ome to a worthy family.”

Chef Amy Chamberlain pesented a check for $4,632 to Board member Sandi Hedman (left) and Development Committee Chair, Bill Hoyt.

Vermont Fuel Dealers Association

VFDA is a non-profit organization of fuel marketers and associated companies in the heating business.  First established in 1963 as the Vermont Oil Heat Institute, VFDA continues to serve as an advocate and resource for this vital industry.

VFDA provides its members with state and federal legislative representation.  VFDA offers a wide variety of services including technical training schools, regulatory assistance, drug and alcohol testing, property and casualty insurance, as well as seminars, workshops and training opportunities on fuel-related issues.

VFDA also operates supplemental fuel assistance fund called the Patch Chit/Neighbor-in-Need Program.  It creates and places pledges, or "chits,"  usually in 100 gallon fuel increments, in a pool for the use of the Department of Social Welfare's Emergency Fuel Program, and other similarly concerned programs. For over twenty years, the program has been used as a statewide "safety net" to address the emergency fuel needs of Vermonters.  VFDA recently expanded the scope of the program to include assistance to Military Families with loved ones serving in Active Duty Status.  VFDA works closely with state agencies, government officials, and other affected parties on issues involving fuel assistance.  The Patch Chit/Neighbor-in-Need Program is just one of several efforts by Vermont’s heating fuel retailers to help those who need assistance the most during the cold winter.

The Vermont Fuel Dealers Association has donated the boiler for the houses we built in East Arlngton, Shaftsbury, Winhall, and Rupert.

"We have chosen to support BAHfH because it is consistent with the efforts of our patch chit/neighbor-in-need program."
