West Rupert Home

We will be adding photos each week of the home we are building for Glenn and Christine Morey and their two daughters, Grace and Makayla. When photos are added, we will place the most recent photos at the top. We also put some of the photos on Shutterfly. You can see slide shows and order these photos. Go to www. shutterfly.com - login at "member sign in" (top) with bennhabitat@yahoo.com and the password is habitat. Then select Morey #1 (for April and before), Morey #2 (for May), Global Village 2008 for June 1-8, and Morey #3 (for June 9 -30). As more albums are added, the numbers will increase.

Metowee Valley Nursery sent several men, including Glenn Morey, and lots of plant material. Within a few hours, the outside of the house was transformed. On Thursday, the lawn will be seeded.

Ellen, Dick, Carl, Fred, and Cliff completed a number of small jobs including - painting the primer coat in Makayla's bedroom, hooking up the dryer vent, building steps for the front entrance, and removing our tools from the home.

Sheldon excavating dug the trench for the electric service and also for the water pipe from the well to the house and installed the septic system. Frost Wells attached the pipes. Hectic Electric can now install the panel box.

Day 35 - We cut in around the windows and doors - put finish coats on several rooms - Fred started putting the wood trim in place around the windows - and Cliff prepped for the kitchen cabinets. It was a productive day.

Day 32 - A small crew of three helped today. We could use more volunteers on Saturdays. We did some touch up work on the celings and interior walls and are ready for the second coat of paint. We also sanded and put a second coat of varnish on the door casings. The highlight of the day was a visit by three students from the Flood Brook school.

This spring these students joined with five others and learned about how Habitat works. They decided to organize a penny drive. They worked for a month, decorated coffee cans to collect pennies and made presentation to their classmates. They raised $296. 23! They visited the Morey home and toured the house with homeowner, Glenn Morey. The money they raised will pay for the paint. The students are shown with two parents, Sharon Poddick and Heather Cameron, who helped them to organize the penny drive.

Day 31 - Twenty-one volunteers helped today. Some sanded sheetrock, others applied primer to the ceiling and walls, and others cut and sanded the trim. We finished early because the paint needed to dry before we could do more.

Jim sanding the walls - Craig applied clear finish to the trim.

Ruth wiped the dust off the walls.

Volunteers from The GAP came to help.

Day 29 and 30, Thursday and Friday, Jul 17 and 18

Day 23 - Satuday - June 28

Many volunteers were picking up donations for the auction, and we had a light turnout of volunteers at the Morey home.

It was mostly a "family" day. A lot got accomplished and it was especially nice because Grace and Makayla, too young to help when we have a regular work day, were able to very involved.

Grace and Makyla brought in lots of sheetrock. Then they stapled plastic to the exterior wall so there would be a proper vapor barrier.

Then, they worked with Kathy in insulate the bedroom walls - so the noise from the livingroom would not be heard.

The master bedroom was finished.

On Friday, Jeff Maney from Efficiency Vermont inspected the insulation - a requirement before we could put sheetrock on the walls. Jeff reported that the job was done perfectly. To meet Efficiency Vermont standards, we have to install a minimum of three Energy Star appliances, six hard wired energy efficient lights, and the home has to meet their standards for insulation.

On Thursday, a crew from Vermont Foam Insulation spent the day insulating the home with open celled foam. The R-Value is tremendous. This home will be very tight.

Day 22

A group from the Gap (Sarah, Karen and Mullainy) came to help in the afternoon. They helped with the siding and filled in a deep hole on the west side of the house. John Davies, John Cilio, Dick, and Barth worked on the siding.

By the end of the day, the ceilings were in place for all three bedrooms and half of the livingroom - diningroom- family room and the siding was completed for the north side of the home..

Day 18

Today was a welcome change from the very hot and humid - un-Vermont-like weather that we have "enjoyed" for the last several days. A lot was accomplished. We installed all the windows, the front sliding door, the Bilko door and the steps to the cellar, built the front entrance, and almost finished the siding on the front of the house. The elecricians made a good deal of progress with the wiring.

Fred, Carl and John built the front entrance.

April 30th!
We spent Wednesday prepping the foundation walls. We inserted perimeter drains, sump pump drains, laid a layer of insulation on top, and then finshed with wire mesh.

We coated the exterior walls with tar - then glued insulation to the walls. We are now ready for the floor to be poured and to have the foundation back filled.
