West Rupert HomeWe will be adding photos each week of the home we are building for Glenn and Christine Morey and their two daughters, Grace and Makayla. When photos are added, we will place the most recent photos at the top. We also put some of the photos on Shutterfly. You can see slide shows and order these photos. Go to www. shutterfly.com - login at "member sign in" (top) with bennhabitat@yahoo.com and the password is habitat. Then select Morey #1 (for April and before), Morey #2 (for May), Global Village 2008 for June 1-8, and Morey #3 (for June 9 -30). As more albums are added, the numbers will increase.
Days 46 and 47 - Saturday, September 6 and 13 These were the last two days that we worked on the home. We finished installing cabinets in the bathroom, cleaned the house, and packed up our trailer so we could move it back to A Safe Place for the winter. Day 45 - Wednesday, September 3 Metowee Valley Nursery sent several men, including Glenn Morey, and lots of plant material. Within a few hours, the outside of the house was transformed. On Thursday, the lawn will be seeded. Ellen, Dick, Carl, Fred, and Cliff completed a number of small jobs including - painting the primer coat in Makayla's bedroom, hooking up the dryer vent, building steps for the front entrance, and removing our tools from the home.
Day 40 - Dedication Day Bill Mattison and the B Flat Band - entertained us during lunch.
Robin Mowrey, Family Support Partner with Chris and Genn on the front steps of their home.
We worked on the door and window trim both days. Some people sanded and applied two coats of varnish, and others cut and put it around the doors and windows. We finished laying the floor. Sheldon excavating dug the trench for the electric service and also for the water pipe from the well to the house and installed the septic system. Frost Wells attached the pipes. Hectic Electric can now install the panel box.
Cliff brought a dog house for Abbigail - the entire Morey family now will have a new home in which to live! True to form, Abbigail barked with joy most of the day.
Day 37 - Wednesday, August 6- We installed the floor in the bathroom and finished half of the living room. Barth and Noble made the cellar door. Noble, Fred, and Craig installed window trim.
Day 35 - We cut in around the windows and doors - put finish coats on several rooms - Fred started putting the wood trim in place around the windows - and Cliff prepped for the kitchen cabinets. It was a productive day. Day 32 - A small crew of three helped today. We could use more volunteers on Saturdays. We did some touch up work on the celings and interior walls and are ready for the second coat of paint. We also sanded and put a second coat of varnish on the door casings. The highlight of the day was a visit by three students from the Flood Brook school.
This spring these students joined with five others and learned about how Habitat works. They decided to organize a penny drive. They worked for a month, decorated coffee cans to collect pennies and made presentation to their classmates. They raised $296. 23! They visited the Morey home and toured the house with homeowner, Glenn Morey. The money they raised will pay for the paint. The students are shown with two parents, Sharon Poddick and Heather Cameron, who helped them to organize the penny drive.
Day 31 - Twenty-one volunteers helped today. Some sanded sheetrock, others applied primer to the ceiling and walls, and others cut and sanded the trim. We finished early because the paint needed to dry before we could do more.
Ruth wiped the dust off the walls. Day 29 and 30, Thursday and Friday, Jul 17 and 18
Grace at work on the storage shed.
Frost wells dug the well - found water, not oil! at 180'. We are most grateful to Frost Wells for their help.
Jim White - above - and John Davies - left - sanded the joint compound.
Day 27 - Saturday - July 12
Employees from the Vermont Country Store joined other volunteers to finish the siding on the house and installed the gutters and downspouts.
Glenn Morey - left photo.
Fred, Barth, Charlie, and Noble worked on the shed roof and siding. John Davies, Jim, and Nancy worked on the sheetrock - put on the corner beed and filled screw holes. Carl Hedman, Carl Molenhof and John Cilio completed the siding on the west side. Linda, Jared, and Dick sorted building materials for future use. Day 25 - Saturday - July 5
Day 24 - Wednesday - July 2
Fred and Noble faced the posts with trim, and installed the front door.
Day 23 - Satuday - June 28 Many volunteers were picking up donations for the auction, and we had a light turnout of volunteers at the Morey home.
It was mostly a "family" day. A lot got accomplished and it was especially nice because Grace and Makayla, too young to help when we have a regular work day, were able to very involved.
Then, they worked with Kathy in insulate the bedroom walls - so the noise from the livingroom would not be heard.
The master bedroom was finished.
On Friday, Jeff Maney from Efficiency Vermont inspected the insulation - a requirement before we could put sheetrock on the walls. Jeff reported that the job was done perfectly. To meet Efficiency Vermont standards, we have to install a minimum of three Energy Star appliances, six hard wired energy efficient lights, and the home has to meet their standards for insulation.
Day 22 A group from the Gap (Sarah, Karen and Mullainy) came to help in the afternoon. They helped with the siding and filled in a deep hole on the west side of the house. John Davies, John Cilio, Dick, and Barth worked on the siding. Day 21 A group from Citizens Bank came to help. Employees and customers from the West Pawlet, Proctor, and Bennington banks came to help. They were joined by other volunteers - and we worked on the siding on the back of the home and the porch celing. It was a beautiful spring day, and a lot was accomplished. Day 20 We worked on three things until showers stopped us; siding on the back of the house, the roof for the front entrance, and the ceiling for the interior. Day 19 A group from the Vermont Country Store came - and regulars, Chris, Glenn, Bill, Dick, and Cliff. We worked on the siding and the sheetrock for the ceiling. In addition, Dan Nardi worked on the wiring. Day 18 Today was a welcome change from the very hot and humid - un-Vermont-like weather that we have "enjoyed" for the last several days. A lot was accomplished. We installed all the windows, the front sliding door, the Bilko door and the steps to the cellar, built the front entrance, and almost finished the siding on the front of the house. The elecricians made a good deal of progress with the wiring. Day 17 Members of the Rupert and Dorset Fire Departments started putting on the shingles at 6:00 a.m. and were done by 10! They did a great job, and we are most appreciative of their generous support of Habitat and the Morey family! Days 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16 Saturday - The fascia was finished, the first few rows of siding on the front of the house were put into place, and BBA students put together a shed that they built at BBA for the home. It was brought by truck to the site and they assembled it. The students were led by advisor, Peter Nicholson and teacher, Cliff Hay. Friday - The deck and the porch landing were finished. May 31st - Day 9 The rain held off, and we were able to complete the insulation of the exterior walls, and we started the strapping for the sheetrock on the ceiling.
May 28th - Day 8 On another picture perfect spring day, we had many volunteers and we were able to put up all the roof trusses, and prepared things for the sheetrock on the celing. It was a great day of work. Thus far, fifty different volunteers have contributed 769 hours.
May 24th - Day 7 On a picture perfect spring day, we finished the plates on the walls, insulated all the exterior walls, and set up the staging. A group from the First Baptist Church of Manchester helped.
May 21st - Day 6 We built and put all the interior walls in place. We also framed all the windows and doors with 1" wood. We got a great day of work in before the rain came.
May 17th - Day 5 Some volunteers helped to clean out storage units at A Safe Place in preparation for our auction. Other volunteers helped on site and completed the sheathing for the home. This viewer shows some photos from Days 9 and 5.
May 14th - Day 4 Another picture perfect Vermont spring day - we built the exterior walls. Teams from J.K. Adams, The Gap, and The Bananna Republic came to help. May 10th - Day 3 On a picture perfect Vermont spring day - we built the deck. May 7th - Day 2 - A small crew did a great job cutting and placing the plates for the top of the walls and then made sure everything was level. We also sorted and stacked the lumber that had been salvaged from Kimball Self-Storage in Manchester.
We coated the exterior walls with tar - then glued insulation to the walls. We are now ready for the floor to be poured and to have the foundation back filled.
Russ, Jesse, and Don prepping the walls. It was a very good start!
Jim Sheldon of Sheldon Excavation, Inc. dug the hole for the foundation and Rusty Martelle built the forms for the footings. The footings and walls will be poured during the week of April 21st. We expect to have our first volunteers to the site, on Wednesday, April 30.
