The Bank of Bennington was originally chartered as Bennington Co-operative Savings and Loan Association on May 14, 1917. The mission is to provide excellent service to area residents and includes commercial banking services for the small to medium-sized businesses located in our marketplace. We originate a large share of the home mortgage loans made in Bennington and Rensselaer Counties. We have introduced additional financial services, including Internet-based banking and investment sales and service.

The Board of Directors is composed of local residents charged with the responsibility of enhancing the original philosophy of a community bank: providing home loans, business loans, and a variety of savings accounts, Certificates of Deposit, checking and Money Market Accounts.

Long a generous supporter of Habitat's mission, the Bank of Bennington made a special leadership gift in 2010  us support of our affiliate's goal of building two homes in the Bennington area and to purchase and develop land in Manchester.  The Bank of Bennington supported the affiliate's appeal to other financial institutions asking them to join them in supporting our affiliate's work.  A total of $18,000 was raised from the Merchants Bank, People's United Bank, The Heritage Family Credit Union, the Berkshire Bank, and the Bank of Bennington.

Ten members of the Bank of Bennington enjoyed special banker's hours on Wednesday, July 29, 2010, when they helped build at the Silver Street site.  They put on siding on the shed.  The siding had been donated by an area contractor.  They did a great job and had lots of fun.

Ibankers1-webn 2010, the Berkshire Bank joined with other area financial institutions in supporting our affiliate's goal of building two homes in the Bennington area and in purchasing and developing land in Manchester for future Habitat homes.  A total of $18,000 was raised!  We are most grateful to the bank for their continued and very generous support!  Jim Keyes, Commercial Regional Executive, and Shawn Davis, Commercial Lender, joined with others on July 29, 2010 for tour of the Silver Street home and a group photo.  Shawn and Jim are the first and third (left to right) in the back row of the photo.

Photo on left was taken on June 16, 2007. We greatly appreciate the continued support of Factory Point Bank and now, Berkshire Bank employees. In addition, the Greater Berkshire Foundation, made a generous contribution that we used to build the home in West Rupert.

"We support BAHfH because, we are committed to investing in the communities in which we serve.  We take pride in helping our neighbors, and understand that community strength ultimately makes for a stronger company. "

In the spring of 2008, the Berkshire Bank found a most creative way to support Habitat. They donated funds sufficient for the purchase of building supplies for two sheds.

As a part of their service learning requirement, students at Burr and Burton built a shed that was assembled at the West Rupert home on June 7, 2008. The shed give the Morey family badly needed storage space. In addition to helping a Habitat family, the students learned basic building skills from their teacher, Cliff Hay.

Sudents at the Career Development Center of Bennington also built a shed for Habitat. Jim Glibert, their teacher, wanted his students to learn how to build a house and building this shed was a great first step.

The students transported the shed to r.k. Miles in Manchester where it was displayed until it was sold. Habitat used the proceeds to buy building supplies.

In speaking about the shed projects, Peter Lafayette, the Berkshire Bank Foundation’s Executive Director stated, “This project is an innovative way of both helping a local non-profit agency and teaching young people the value of giving back to the community. We are excited to be involved in this project that has the involvement of several groups, and includes a positive hands-on experience.”

In the fall of 2008, the Berkshire Bank, responded to the financial crisis by asking customers and employees to indicate which area organizations should receive financial support in meeting urgent needs in food, fuel, and housing. Habitat is very grateful to Berkshire Bank employees and customers to be one of several area organizations to receive support. We will use this gift to purchase building materials for the home we will start in the spring of 2008.

What We Do

The official description is “the collection, transfer, processing and disposal of non-hazardous waste” but, simply put, we make go away what people don’t want around. That’s where the simplicity ends. With the advent of recycling, the growing awareness of the health effects of unmanaged disposal and transfer sites; collecting, moving, sorting and safely disposing of our waste has become an often complex business.

Casella Waste Management has helped us over the years by providing dumpsters at our work sites and also at the auctions in 2007 and 2008. We are most grateful to the management of Casella for their generous support.

Citizens Bank

In 1828, Citizens Financial Group got its start as a small community bank called the High Street Bank in Providence, Rhode Island. In 1871, the directors of High Street Bank established Citizens Savings Bank. Today, Citizens Financial Group has $155 billion in assets, making it the 8th largest commercial bank holding company in the United States. Owned by RBS, The Royal Bank of Scotland Group plc, Citizens now has branches in 13 states, including Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Vermont, and Rhode Island. They also have non-branch offices in more than 30 states. Linda Magoon is the Vermont Regional Manager.

"Citizens Bank is guided by the belief that the strength of our company is tied to the strength of the communities where we do business. "

Citizens has a tradition of recognizing one bank in each state each year for its employees' outstanding commitment to giving back to the community in which they live and work. The West Pawlet Branch was selected because of their commitment to supporting Habitat's mission. As you can see below, members of the bank have worked on site, they have encouraged colleagues from other branches to work with them, and they worked with us to secure generous annual support from Citizens Bank. The West Pawlet branch received a beautiful plaque and a check for $2,500 with the responsibility to determine the charity that they wanted to help. They chose Habitat! We are most grateful for their involvement and very generous support. (Pictured are Donna Daigle, Christine Brown, Harry Haldt, Linda Magoon, and Dick Malley. Unable to be present were Trudy Kelly and Brennyn Daniels).

Harry Haldt, Manager of the West Pawlet Branch, (green tee shirt middle and right photos) organized a team from Citizens Bank to help build on June 13, 2009. He surprised us with a contribution of $2,500! He is shown withHabitat family partners, Jen and Patrick Siegrist (above right). The funds will purchase building supplies for their home. Harry was joined at the site by Alma, Celeste, and Susan.

A group from Citizens Bank helped with the build in West Rupert on June 21, 2008. The group included employees and customers from the West Pawlet, Proctor, and Bennington branches.

Brennyn, Mary Ellen, and Michelle from the Citizens Bank worked on the Rupert home in June. They installed siding.

On November 4th a group from the West Pawlet branch, including branch manager, Harry Haldt, Brennyn Daniels, Christine Brown, and Michele Hunter helped to apply and sand joint compound on the walls. This photo montage includes some photos of them in action.

In the fall of 2005 a group of Citizens employees representing the three branches in Bennington County worked together on the Shaftsbury home. In addition, the bank made a generous financial contribution.

The bank has established a very unique program in Burlington, VT. The Committee on Temporary Shelter (COTS) serves approximately 1,600 homeless children, women and men each year through its emergency shelters and service programs in the Burlington area.

Comollo Antiques and Fne Wines

ABOUT US AND THE SHOP - We have an old school, brick and mortar, open shop (a fast disappearing breed), where buying, selling, appraising, educating and talking about antiques, art, jewelry and cultural artifacts is all we do, period, full time, every day, for over 20 years. We have a constant stream of people bringing us stuff, and we get requests to come look at new things every day. Being in the Antiques business these days demands that one of us is constantly on the road, doing pickups, deliveries, appraisals, in home consultations, meeting with restorers and conservationists and traveling to specialized libraries and collections for research. We are the third generation of a family tradition and are unquestionably one of the busiest shops in Vermont! The next time you are in New England please be sure to stop here in Manchester Vermont to check out our little slice of heaven.

Clarke has served as the auctioneer for our first two benefit auctions (in July 2007 and 2008). He has done this as a volunteer. This is Clake's contribution to Habitat and the community. in which he lives.

We partner with Efficiency Vermont to keep construction costs down and make sure our homes are safe, healthy, durable and affordable over the long term. Efficiency Vermont is the nation's first statewide provider of energy efficiency services. Funded by an energy efficiency charge on Vermonter’s electric bills, Efficiency Vermont is an independent, non-profit organization under contract to the Vermont Public Service Board. They provide technical advice, financial assistance and design guidance to help make Vermont homes, farms, schools and businesses energy efficient.

Habitat receives a rebate for meeting specific requirements for insulation, ventilation, use of energy efficient appliances, and lighting.. There needs to be an Energy Star ventilation fan on a 24-hour timer. The heating system, refrigerator and dishwasher must be ENERGY STAR labeled. We install no fewer than eight hard-wired fixtures for energy efficient lights and each of our homes meets insulation and air sealing standards. We invest in good windows. Our houses are very tight; built to withstand Vermont’s cold winters. To learn about energy efficient appliances go to Energy Star Appliances.

The Efficiency Vermont website contains lots of practical advice for residential and business users. By calling 888-921-5900, people can learn how to lower their energy bills, figure out why their electric bills are high, and get rebates for their energy-efficient purchases. In addition, people can get technical help and learn about financial incentives for energy-efficient buildings, equipment and lighting.

We hope our good building practices and use of energy saving devices will serve as an example for other homeowners. If we can afford to incorporate energy efficiency into an affordable home, anybody can! Vermont's reduction of carbon dioxide in 2005, through energy efficiency in homes and businesses, provided the same emissions reductions that would have been achieved if 76, 300 fewer cars had traveled on Vermont's roads in 2005. Everyone can be part of reducing Vermont’s carbon emissions by following our example and working with Efficiency Vermont to reduce energy use.

Our initial energy audit develops a customized plan, and our experienced professionals perform quality work that makes sense for you. Hand Energy Services has worked with us for several years. They completed a "blow door" test on the West Rupert home, enabling us to locate and seal any air leaks. They installed the foam insulation for the home we built in North Bennington, insuring that the home will be extremely energy efficient. They not only did a terrific job, but they also worked with us on the cost, making it affordable for us to use the best insulation for the home. We are grateful to Thomas and Jamie Hand and are glad to recommend them highly. Getting an energy audit completed for an older home is the place to start.

7-2-10-midura-group2-webJuly 2, 2010

Over the years, Lou and his colleagues have been a tremendous source of help to us.  They have put the plywood sheathing and felt on the last five homes we have built.  They make short work of what would constitute a very difficult and dangerous job for an all-volunteer crew!

Pictured are Lou Midura, Rick Keyes, Aaron Gates, Rick Dailey, Jason Griffs, Devin Midura, Dana Midura, and Caleb Keyes.  Thanks to all for a great job!

Lou and his crew of Rick Keyes, Justin Keyes, and Aaron Gates put up the plywood and the felt for the Winhall Home on the morning of September 14, 2006.

Rick, Justin, and Aaron spent Friday morning, June 1st putting the plywood and felt on the Lewis home in Rupert. They made short work of a job that would have taken volunteers more time and would have surely been risky for people not accustomed to this work!

Lou and his crew helped us once again at the end of May 2008. They put the plywood and felt on the roof at the Morey home in West Rupert and thus saving us time and most importantly, leaving the high work to professionals, not to volunteers.

We are most grateful to Lou and his crew for helping us out in this way. When asked why they were helping, Lou explained, "We have been very fortunate, we have the skills, and we are glad to be able to give back to help others in this way."

Lou serves as the Zion Episcopal Church liaison to Habitat's Faith Relations Committee.

On June 16, 2009, Lou Midura and his crew, Justin Keyes, Rick Keyes, and Rick Dailey volunteered to put the plywood sheathing and the felt paper on the North Bennington home. Once again, this was a tremendous help to us. The pitch of this roof was steep, and Lou and his men put it up with ease, saving us valuable time, and making it much safer for our volunteers.

Note that Lou wears the Red Sox
hat wherever he goes!

Ramsay Gourd found a creative way to raise awareness and funds for our affiliate. Ramsay trained hard for the Maple Leaf half marathon and he asked family and friends to sponsor him by making a donation to Habitat. Ramsay surprised himself by finishing the run faster than he ever expected, and he never expected to raise as much money. His sponsors made extremely generous donations and came through with just over $10,000 in gifts to Habitat! We are most grateful to Ramsay and to everyone who encouraged and supported him. We used the funds to purchase building supplies for the home we completed in North Bennington in the fall of 2009.

RMS Plumbing and Heating

Phil Mazzucco, owner of RMS Plumbing and Heating, donated the tubing for radiant heat in the Rupert Home. Because of his generosity, the heating for this home will cost no more than conventional baseboard heat. Accoding to Efficiencty Vermont, there will be a considerable cost saving because the water will not need to be heated to the same temperature as baseboard heat. This system will provide the Lewis family with years of a warm home at a considerable cost saving for the lifetime of the home.

Phil designed and installed the plumbing for the Morey home in West Rupert. We are most grateful to Phil for his generosity and greatly admire his community spirit!

Solar Pro specializes in Solar Water Heating for homes and businesses in Southern Vermont. We sell, design, install, and service high quality Solar Thermal Systems for the lowest prices in our area. And, Solar Pro provides FREE site evaluations!

For the first time ever, we installed a solar hot water heater at the North Bennington home. While this made the initial cost of the home more expensive, the long-term benefit and cost savings, along with the federal tax credit, made this an easy decision to make. Jim and Karen of Solar Pro contributed the installation of the system as their contribution to the Habitat home. The estimate is that the system will pay for itself with savings in four years.

I had an epiphany during spring of 2007 to become a shoemaker!  I hand craft elegant shoes for women inside my “Sole of Vermont” studio in Manchester, Vermont. Using old world techniques blended with more than 20 years of professional design experience, beautiful, unique one-of-a-kind beautiful shoes are born.

I’m inspired by shoe styles of the 1940’s through 1960’s and create each pair as an original work of art, from the whimsical to the elegant, incorporating vintage leathers, silks and furs into my designs. All my shoes have a story based on the materials that went into them and I give a distinct name to every pair.

I can be found most days in my modern studio which Alan and I built using sustainable techniques. Adorned with a crystal chandelier and vintage fashion art, stepping inside is reminiscent of a city boutique. I would be delighted to welcome you to my studio and show you some chaussures!
Nancy Benoit

In addition to designing elegant shoes, Nancy is very creative with designing public relations materials, and she has been a tremendous help to our affiliate in redesigning our handouts, and the material for the Jennifer Lane project

Square D

For many years, Schneider Electric has supported Habitat for Humanity International, an organization dedicated to eliminating poverty housing throughout the world. We share in Habitat for Humanity's commitment to helping people in need everywhere secure decent, affordable shelter.

As a National Partner and a Cornerstone Society member of Habitat’s "More Than Houses” campaign, Schneider Electric has donated almost $6 million worth of residential electrical equipment for use in homes built in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. In 2006, Schneider Electric renewed its commitment to Habitat with a pledge to donate $7 million worth of Square D® residential electrical equipment over the next four-and-a-half years.  In addition, many of our people dedicate time and muscle to Habitat home builds.

To further underscore our commitment to Habitat for Humanity, in 2007 the Schneider Electric/Square D Foundation will fund up to seven whole house sponsorships. The sponsorships fully fund the cost of the land, infrastructure and materials to build a Habitat home. The Foundation also funds the cost for employee teams to participate in one-day home building events.

According to Habitat, 5.1 million American families have "worst-case" housing needs and are forced to pay more than half their income for housing, endure overcrowded conditions or live in houses with severe physical deficiencies. Worldwide, some 2 billion people live in poverty housing. More than 1 billion live in urban slums, and that figure is expected to double by 2030.

Working in partnership with low-income families to build decent homes they can afford to buy, Habitat helps to break the cycle of poverty and hopelessness. We believe in the efforts of Habitat for Humanity and our role in facilitating our people’s involvement in Habitat activities in their communities.

We are most grateful to Square D for supplying the circuit breakers for each of our homes.

The Perfect Wife Restaurant and Tavern contributed $5 for every entrée served in the dining room and $1 for every entrée served in the tavern throughout the month of September (2007). 708 entrees were served in the main dining room and 1,092 entres were served in the tavern - for a total of $4,632!

We are most grateful to Amy and Geoff for finding such a creative way to support Habitat's mission. We thank everyone who took advantage of this opportunity to eat well and to support Habitat's work in our community.

They did the same promotion in April of 2006 and a total of $6,025 was raised for Habitat as a result of this extradinarily generous promotion!

In explaining their decsion to help Habitat in this way, Chef/owners, Amy and Geoff Chamberlain said "we feel this was an opportunity through the restaurant to raise money and awareness of the local efforts of Habitat for Humanity. By providing a great meal to our guests, they in turn will be helped provide a much needed safe and affordable ome to a worthy family.”
